Sustainability: The Challenges
The built environment has a great influence over our daily lives, from our homes to our places of work and through transport and infrastructure.
Buildings and infrastructure have a significant impact on the environment, through the emission of greenhouse gases, the production of waste and the consumption of water and construction materials. These factors represent a considerable contribution to climate change and other environmental problems both in the UK and around the world.
As the need for urgent action on climate change becomes ever clearer, clients, professionals and end users in the built environment all need to work together to provide solutions which are not only environmentally sustainable, but have positive social and economic effects. At MLM our interdisciplinary approach and our wide range of clients across the various sectors enables us to facilitate learning between the team members and to provide solutions to the issues facing us all and to take the necessary action required. We recognise how commercial pressures influence projects, and believe in ambitious targets and good regulation, based on realism and not prescription, allowing the design team the flexibility to innovate and adapt accordingly to keep sustainability on the agenda.
