This bridge forms part of a much larger scheme comprising a new highway to access the planned 3500 homes Wellingborough East Development.
MLM carried out feasibility studies to ascertain a cost effective solution, completed the Form A - Approval in Principle and all detailed design aspects up to Tender Stage.
The proposed new underbridge is a single 30 metre span bridge over the Midland Main Line between Wellingborough Railway Station and Mill Road Bridge. The deck is skewed at an angle of approximately 21 degrees and accommodates a curved 37 metre long stretch of highway. Because of the curved geometry of the road, the width of the deck needed to be 35.7 metres wide, leaving on both sides of the highway enough room for the footways to widen creating two triangular piazzas. It has a precast pre-stressed concrete bridge deck supported on semi-integral abutments with piled foundations.
Special care was taken in the design of the parapets as they not only comply with the strict requirements of Network Rail but also provide a temporary safe protection during construction and enhance the final appearance of the bridge.
