Tate Modern Extension, Tate Modern, Southwark

Tate Modern Extension

MLM Building Control were appointed to provide the Building Regulation Approval service for the transformation of Tate Modern through the addition of an iconic building by Herzog & de Meuron, together with a series of works to the existing Tate Modern.

This unique assembly building comprises 11 levels which are interconnected by a vertical boulevard and some open voids. The existing 3 large buried oil tanks have been retained and integrated into the scheme to create underground performance spaces which will be heavily populated during blockbuster events. Due to the buildings unusual layout, Section 20 status and complexity of the project, MLM are working closely with both the fire safety engineer and London Fire authority to resolve the difficult fire safety issues.

The sustainable credentials of the buildings are also high on the agenda with the energy use minimised by adopting passive measures, efficient M&E systems and the use of appropriate on-site renewable energy technologies.
