Southend Airport Hotel, Essex

- Client: Stobart Group
- Architect: Leech Rhodes Walker
- Market Sector: Hotels
- Services: Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Building Control
This brand new 4 Star Holiday Inn hotel is part of the Southend Airport redevelopment for the Stobart Group. The button was finally pushed on this £10m scheme in June 2011 with a planned opening date of July 2012, in time for the London Olympics.
The striking five storey 129 bedroom hotel will also have a magnificent, fully sound proofed rooftop bar and restaurant seating over one hundred customers - a first for Holiday Inn in the UK - providing spectacular, panoramic views of the airport and the surrounding area.
The short overall programme had a significant impact on the design period but MLM performed to provide the design information on time and within the cost plan budget.
The structure comprised a steel frame with metal deck & insitu concrete upper floors and insitu concrete ground bearing floor slab on piled foundations. Structural design & analysis was undertaken using the Fastrack software package and a 3D model was produced providing a further time saving for the steel fabricator who were able to use our model for production purposes.
