RSPB Visitors Centre, Lakenheath

- Client: RSPB
- Architect: Forum Architects
- Market Sector: Leisure
- Services: Building Services
The project involved providing a new visitor centre on the Lakenheath Fens. The building was designed to minimise the impact to its surroundings yet provide an important function and meeting place for visitors. The project forms part of the RSPB’s Great Fens Project.
Key Features:
- Single storey building constructed on a reinforced concrete raft incorporating glulam timber rafters, solid timber decking and sedum roof.
- External walls use a combination of cedar cladding and traditional flint walls.
- Due to the buildings location and remoteness from mains services the heating is provided by low pressure gas (LPG) using a reconstituted storage tank. Solar panels have been provided to provide the buildings hot water.
- Low energy products have been selected to reduce the buildings consumption and hence incoming services requirements.
