MLM were appointed at GRIP Stage 4 and 5 to design ground anchors to wing walls displaying vertical cracking adjacent to the bridge abutments.
MLM carried out a detailed Site Investigation and advised the client that the problem was caused by seasonal moisture variations in the clay soils, rather than an instability failure of the wall and that an alternative design solution was required.
The recommended design scheme to separate the wing walls to accommodate seasonal ground movement and manage vegetation growth on the embankment was subsequently adopted by Network Rail and implemented for construction, including masonry repair details based on Network Rail standard details.
