The Hitchin to Cambridge line is to be upgraded to enable the operation of 12 car passenger trains and as part of this initiative Letchworth station requires platform extensions.
Utilising our in-house PTS trained teams, MLM arranged and carried out site investigations including a structural condition inspection, earthworks inspection, ecology survey and ground investigation. MLM used the information from these surveys to produce a GRIP Stage 4 - Form A platform extension design for submission to Network Rail, including a Geotechnical Report, Ecology Report and Environmental Management Plan.
The station has 2 platforms, both of which are being extended at each end using traditional front wall platform construction. Various site constraints including a road overbridge, existing services, existing OLE masts and existing signalling made the design a challenging exercise. MLM value engineered the GRIP 3 design by designing out the need for retaining walls to the existing cuttings. MLM worked with the multi-disciplinary project team to produce a mutually acceptable design for submission to Network Rail, including carrying out the project CEM role.
