Laburnum House is a sustainable timber frame one and two storey house in the fens on the edge of Ely, which was completed in 2008 as a private residence for a local Architect.
Because of the ground conditions, the timber frame sits atop a Reinforced Concrete slab on piled foundation; however, in order to clear the 200 year climate change flood levels in the fens, this is set 1.5m above the surrounding ground level.
Above slab, the Glulam Timber frame and Cedar weatherboard clad building also boasts sedum roof, ground source heat pump, its own 6kW wind turbine and sewage treatment. MLM provided full services for the project, including Flood Risk Assessments, Civil & Structural Designs, M&E design and advice on the sustainable construction, and Building Control Services.
Winner of the 2009 RIBA Sustainability Award.
Key Features:
- Ground source heat pump.
- Wind turbine.
