MLM carried out inspections, assessments and design for a partial re-build of a 1950s prestressed beam bridge deck with a wrought iron support trestle. The Assessments involved simple and rigorous methods of analysis to current standards and the Codes of Practice current at the time of construction, incorporating consideration of the loss of prestressing strands caused by “arcing” from the overhead electrified lines.
Following our assessments we produced various feasibility schemes for Network Rail’s consideration and the production of Approval in Principle - Form A documentation and drawings. The selected remedial scheme included the design of a prestressed concrete beam infill deck, wrought iron trestle repairs, vehicle barriers, carriageway realignment and new bridge bearings.
A key feature of the scheme was to leave the existing footways in place and just to replace the carriageway beams. This allowed the services in the footways to remain unaffected, greatly simplifying the work. MLM completed the Form B - detailed design and provided attendance and supervision during construction.
The project was successfully completed within the 72 hour Possession.
