Infirmary for Chelsea Pensioners, London

- Client: Royal Chelsea Hospital
- Architect: Quinlan & Francis Terry Architects and Steffian Bradley Architects
- Market Sector: Healthcare
- Services: Building Control
Situated on a site adjacent to the existing listed Wren buildings the new Margaret Thatcher Infirmary building at the Royal Hospital is a blend of a classical exterior and a modern interior providing 21st Century medical care for the Chelsea Pensioners.
MLM Building Control were appointed at an early stage and worked collaboratively to help ensure that the external and internal designs not only met the Building Regulation requirements but also those of the Client.
Mobility and the logistics of safe means of escape for the patients was a key design issue. We helped develop the Progressive Horizontal Evacuation strategy and early consultation with the Fire Brigade ensured that the design developed without any problems. Spatial planning was fixed with certainty prior to seeking detailed planning approval.
Additionally MLM were consulted at the planning stage on issues relating to enhanced disabled access beyond the requirements of Approved Document M.
