HM Prison, Norwich

HM Prison

The new buildings at HMP Norwich are a modular construction of concrete and masonry. There were two buildings. The new houseblock designed in two wings at right angles with the staff and administration areas as a link between them. The second building is an education and ancillary services unit for clothes storage and cleaning.

The design was undertaken by Pick Everard architects under contract from Kier Custodial and work commenced in April 2008 and was completed in July 2009. The modular units were manufactured in Belgium and are designed to be visually similar to the standard brick construction of the existing prison buildings. The modular panels were delivered by road and erected as they arrived making the necessity for large storage areas unnecessary. The modular units were constructed with the window and door apertures in place. The service conduits were installed in production to avoid the need for excessive remedial works with a high quality concrete finish ready to be painted to aid construction. The roof is a self supporting system that relies only on the main frame being secured as the roofing cassette panels have been designed to be structurally self supporting to avoid excessive steel rafters and purlins.
