Co-op Fiveways Store, Peartree Road, Stanway

- Client: Co-operative Stores
- Architect: Stanley Bragg
- Market Sector: Retail
- Services: Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering
MLM were appointed to assist with the new Co-op store, whilst the existing store remained trading on a major part of the building footprint.
The building comprised a steel frame structure with pre-cast concrete first floor construction, ground bearing ground floor slab and traditional pad foundations. The building incorporated semi-glazed facades with cantilevered fully glazed balconies at first floor level.
Key Features:
- Castellated steel beams provided long span column free spaces at ground and first floor level.
- Lattice steel joists provided 21m span roof construction.
- Onerous Health and Safety constraints during construction with an operating petrol station adjacent to the site.
- Proposed drainage designed to incorporate existing flow to maintain an open store, and allowing for possible future development of the remaining site.
- Local presence allowed close site supervision through the early enabling works, and attendance to provide site support through the main construction phase.
- Consideration of options to reduce disruptive works to the entrance to the parking area.
