MLM were involved in the design of a chill store substructure and car wharf at Sheerness, Kent.
The 30,000m2 building is constructed partly on land and partly over the Medway and the design had to take account of the different behaviour of the land/marine structures necessitating extensive finite element modelling and investigations into the effective stiffness of the tubular marine piles and the driven cast in place land piles. MLM were also involved in the design of movable crane platforms for the installation of marine piles.
The project included a new jetty and quay for import of perishable foodstuffs and cars.
Key Features
- Pre-cast decking system also used as piling platform for marine work.
- Superflat floor part on marine piles, put on land based piles.
- Mooring/berthing considerations.
- Difficult ground conditions with finite element analysis required.
