Callus Footbridge

Woodberry Down, Hackney

The construction of this footbridge (currently underway) will be the first phase of replacing an existing bridge that was first built in 1931. The existing bridge is too narrow and its reinforced concrete structure doesn’t comply with current standards.

The owners of the bridge, the Diputació de Barcelona, decided to replace it in two phases. In the first phase, a new footbridge built downstream of the existing deck; and in the second phase a new highway bridge will be placed upstream of the old bridge, which will then be demolished.

When complete, the footbridge will be a four equal span, 91.6 metre long continuous structure. The new deck is formed by two asymmetric Corten steel longitudinal hollow box girders linked together at bottom flanges by transversal beams.

We designed an additional cantilevered viewing piazza on the downstream side of the main span which is positioned over the low flow section of the river. This has created a public space that is intended to act as a catalyst for regeneration in the area.
