BRIT School of Performing Arts, Croydon

BRIT School of Performing Arts

The development was a new build music block linked to the existing building by way of ground floor walkway. The design had to adhere to significantly high acoustic performance requirements which, by way of by-product, makes for a safer and more compartmentalised building in terms of fire safety.

On the basis that compartment sizes were kept to a minimum and that the construction was predominantly concrete the risk of fire spread significantly reduced and we could quite reasonably dispense with the requirement for sprinklers as called for in the BB100 document. Boreholes for LZC technology to heat the building were sunk in an adjacent plot as part of the measures required to achieve the BREEAM status of excellent. The new building is a bold design statement that reflects the artistic nature of the students of the BRIT School!

Externally the existing building echoes the style of the Lloyds building in London, but internally, it is a complicated mix of double height spaces and automated AOVs. We had to use our significant experience and technical knowledge within this sector in order to give informed advice to achieve compliance and fire authority approval for the proposed works here.
