MLM were commissioned by Kier Rail to provide GRIP 4 & 5 design services for a bridge bearing replacement and deck refurbishment and repair scheme for a 3 span steel structure spanning the River Gipping in Ipswich.
MLM carried our detailed site investigations including trackside attendance under T3 possession and soffit/beam/pier/abutment inspection from a stable barge in the river.
Following our inspection MLM identified a fundamental structural mechanism failure due to a lack of longitudinal restraint under train breaking or accelerating loads. Whilst bearing replacement and steelwork repair details were developed to Form A and B stages, MLM advised Network Rail of the greater principal issues for review and further consideration.
