MLM were appointed on this refurbishment and alterations project in April 2006 to provide the CDM Co-ordinator role. The Client acquired these joined-up properties for development as an Art Gallery. No 56 and 58 Artillery Lane were first built as brick structures in the early 18th Century and remodeled in 1756/57. The front of No 56 is now widely regarded as the finest surviving mid-Georgian shop front in London. No 56 is Grade 1 Listed, No 58 Grade 2.
The main health and safety risks in the project were identified as follows: weak floor areas, existing occupancy of the building, manual handling and handling of cast iron cladding panels, confined space areas and fragile surfaces, noise, vibration and dust temporary works, presence of asbestos and structural stability of existing building.
In order to facilitate the management of the identified risks during construction and post completion ‘Project Health and Safety Designers Risk Workshop’ were arranged to identify, evaluate and manage risk. The identified risks and management strategy were captured in the ‘Project Hazards Register’ which was used as a live document and was issued to the Principal Contractor when they took over the site. A ‘Project CDM Co-ordinator Progress Report’ was also issued to keep the stakeholders up-to-date with progress on statutory requirements.
