Tides And Times
MLM are pleased to be involved in an ambitious and exciting project celebrating the River Thames.
The RIBA, together with BBC 21CC, the digital learning centre of the BBC, have initiated the project which explores the historical, ecological, geographical and social elements of what makes the River Thames such an iconic image of London.
The initiative introduced 19 primary school groups to 20 cultural institutions on the river, between the Thames Barrier and Kew, through a series of workshops with art and architecture professionals to create multimedia pieces of work including short films.
Three school groups worked with RIBA architects Alsop Architects, Urban Salon and Amenity Space to design three ‘pods’ to showcase the work.
These installations have been stationed at Somerset House, Royal Festival Hall and Southwark Cathedral. The pods aim to provide a way for the public to engage with the multimedia pieces created by the school groups, whilst also encouraging visitors to physically explore the Thames area itself by walking between the pod locations along the walking route.
The construction of the pods was supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. MLM Building Control was approached by the RIBA to offer advice on the Building Control side of the pod construction and to ensure that the pods met the requirements of the Building Regulations. MLM Consulting Engineers assessed the structural stability of the pod with regards to the Building Regulations.
The Tides and Times exhibition will be accessible to all, free-of-charge, during Summer 2009, culminating in the Mayor's Thames Festival on 12-13 September.
