MLM Project wins RIBA awardLaburnum House

Laburnum House

Laburnum House, designed by and for a local Cambridge Architect, has recently been awarded the RIBA East Residential Design Award. Further to this, it has also received a Sustainability Commendation from RIBA East.

The property was designed by the Architect himself, with MLM providing all other design services. The house sits within the flood plain surrounding Ely outside of the city's flood defences, and the top 4m of ground contains peat (creating major settlement issues, indeed the original house had nearly collapsed due to settlement). Following MLM's analysis of flooding levels, a floor level of nearly 1.5m above the surrounding area was selected, and a piled raft built at this level - effectively sitting the building on stilts above the flood plain. Above this slab, the house is a Glulam Timber frame with Cedar weatherboard clad building and also boasts sedum roof. The house is self sufficient in its energy requirements with solar water heating, ground source heat pump, it's own 6kW wind turbine and sewage treatment.

MLM provided full Multi-Disciplinary services for the project, including Geotechnical Investigations, Asbestos Surveys, Flood Risk Assessments, Civil and Structural Designs, Mechanical and Electrical Design, Building Control Services and advice regarding Sustainability.

The RIBA Jury comments were as follows: "This house with its very polished design for the architect’s own use is located on a generous site, adjacent to one of the main roads at the outskirts of Ely. Details are well considered and the internal spaces flow beautifully with views out to open country. The many sustainability features including a reed bed and wind turbine."

Congratulations to everybody within MLM who worked on this truly multi-discipline project.
