Laying the Foundations for a Greener Future in SuffolkCertificate and cheque presented to Brian Holder

Colin Bowen (Building Services, Ipswich) and Lady Clare Euston, Chairman of the Suffolk Strategic Partnership present Brian Holder, Sustainability Manager from UCS, with a certificate and a cheque for £200.

The Creating the Greenest County Awards took place last month at The West Wing of the historic Ickworth House.  These awards are now in their second year and aim to get the whole County involved in responding to climate change and environmental issues.

The initiative forms part of Suffolk’s new Community Strategy, and brings together many organisations – from local government to non-profit groups and businesses – who have signed the Statement of Intent with the shared aim of changing the way we live and work.

MLM were again sponsoring the category of Creating the Greenest Business: Building Award.  This category recognises and celebrates an example of best practice in a local business development that can demonstrate the most complete integration of sustainability into elements of its design, build process, and management.

The panel of judges, including staff volunteers from MLM, declared The University Campus Suffolk Waterfront Building the winner in this category.

The Waterfront Building utilises innovative, energy saving technology such as an extensive heat recovery system from fresh air circulation; lighting controlled by occupancy sensors and advanced building management systems control natural ventilation.  It has also achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and has already become a distinctive local landmark with its green roof providing a visible symbol of its less obvious sustainable features.

Technical Director, Colin Bowen attended the awards ceremony and presented a certificate and cheque for £200 to Brian Holder, Sustainability Manager at the University.

Colin took the opportunity to remind the audience of the importance of sustainable construction, and the role of the Building Services Engineer as part of the design team, to persuade Clients to invest in low carbon buildings, even in the current market, as it makes financial sense in the life expectancy of buildings.
